Community and Wellbeing

At Gozo Acupuncture & Wellness, we believe that wellbeing extends beyond the treatment room.

Through community education, voluntary health initiatives and local sponsorships, we are proud to support the people, connections and causes that help our Gozo community thrive.

Traditional Chinese Medicine
& Malta's Prehistoric Heritage

An interdisciplinary exploration of the Tarxien and Mnajdra pregnant-woman statuettes

In February 2026, I was invited to offer a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective on the prehistoric pregnant-woman statuettes from Tarxien and Mnajdra. My observational review explored the reported placement of 16 shells and other marked locations in relation to anatomical landmarks and corresponding acupuncture points.

The review identified a notable pattern along the body’s anterior and posterior midlines, extending from the mouth and chest through the abdominal and pelvic regions to the spine. It also considered bilateral placements around the groin, underarms and shoulder blades, which correspond with locations recognised in acupuncture traditions.

Viewed through a TCM lens, this distribution presents an intriguing anatomical pattern involving central body axes and regions associated with gestation and vitality.

The review offers a starting point for interdisciplinary discussion between traditional medicine and Malta’s prehistoric heritage, while recognising that further archaeological and anatomical investigation would be needed to explore these observations.

This was an exploratory comparative review, not evidence that prehistoric Maltese communities practised acupuncture or possessed Chinese meridian theory.
